FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, November 28 (FENA) - Organized by the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina, representatives of all police stations in the Sarajevo Canton and the Sarajevo Canton Ministry of Interior attended an educational workshop on prevention, treatment and combating domestic violence.

The Sarajevo Canton Interior Minister Admir Katica thanked the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina for organizing an educational workshop and launching a campaign "16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence" aimed at ending silence on violence against women.

“According to the official records of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the SC, in the month of October alone, 31 incidents were recorded with the characteristic of the crime of domestic violence, and out of all the perpetrators, 50 percent are returnees. In the same month, one crime of rape was recorded, and we also witnessed murders, where victims were women,” Katica said.

Minister Katica emphasized that citizens of the Sarajevo Canton and beyond must be encouraged not to allow themselves to be victims of physical and psychological abuse.

“In cases when they cannot resolve conflict situations on their own, they should contact social service centers or the police,” Katica added.

Joeri Maas, Head of Policy and Planning at the OSCE Mission to BiH, said that domestic violence directly affects a significant number of women in BiH and beyond.

“This problem is not always visible or easy to address. This is a constant safety challenge for the entire society. Domestic violence has to be prevented and addressed. Responsibility for delivering solutions lies with all of us, and this responsibility implies a firm and coordinated response. Violence is not a private matter,” Maas said.

Head of the Office of the Police Commissioner of the Police Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the SC, Mustafa Bešić, addressing those present, said that at least one event that has elements of the crime of domestic violence occurs every day in the Sarajevo Canton.

As part of the global campaign "16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence", the OSCE Mission to BiH called on anyone who witnesses or undergoes any form of violence or abuse to report the case to the police via telephone line 122, the Sarajevo Cantonal MoI said.
