ZAGREB, November 21 (FENA) - Speaker of the House of Peoples of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina and President of the HDZ BiH Dragan Čović spoke yesterday with German Chancellor Angela Merkel about establishing power, BiH's European path and reforms to the electoral legislation.

In an interview with FENA, Čović points out that the meeting was organized on the sidelines of the EPP Electoral Congress in Zagreb and was very meaningful and useful.

“Chancellor Merkel insisted on discussing the situation in BiH and in particular to clarify to her the agreement on the unblocking of the establishment of power at the state level and what has been adopted in the Reform Program document in relation to NATO.

Of course, we talked about the Election Law, because we have already discussed this topic on three or four occasions, and obviously, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković also prepared the terrain for it. We have emphasized this now as a key task to ensure that we have legitimate representatives of the constituent peoples, which is not possible without amending the Election Law,” said Čović.

He added that in his talks with Chancellor Merkel, he stressed the need to seize the momentum and finish the election law reform in a month or two in order to have the next general elections in 2022 in an atmosphere that provides for a prompt implementation of election results, in comparison to what have happened in the last year or so.

“We had a pleasant conversation. She was interested in the details, because she obviously knows a lot about the situation and problems in BiH,” Čović added, summarizing the conversation he had with the German Chancellor.

He also spoke with a number of other European officials in Zagreb yesterday and points out that today's continuation of the congress will allow for useful meetings, including those with EU officials directly responsible for Southeast Europe.

“I emphasized our EU and NATO paths on one hand, and the stabilization of relations within BiH on the other. This can best be achieved through restoring confidence, which in turn is the best way to resolve the issue of election law and eliminate the possibility of others electing political representatives for the Croat people.

Not much is left that BiH needs to do in order to become a candidate for the EU, and this includes the appointment of the Council of Ministers and changes to the Election Law, said Čović in an interview with FENA in Zagreb, where he participates in the EPP election congress.
