Osmanović-Hartmann: Ensure conditions for BiH youth to study in Austria

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, October 31 (FENA) – BiH Minister of Civil Affairs Adil Osmanović received Ambassador of the Republic of Austria to Bosnia and Herzegovina Ulrike Hartmann to discuss current political issues in BiH and possibilities for enhancing cooperation between the Republic of Austria and BiH.

The interlocutors stated that Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of Austria have traditionally had good cooperation in the field of education.

“Until recently, the so called "Hundred-year agreement on cooperation in education" was applied, so a large number of students from BiH have studied at universities in the Republic of Austria on the same terms as Austrian nationals. It is extremely important for us to continue our cooperation in the interest of our students,” said Minister Osmanović.

He initiated the signing of a cooperation agreement in the field of youth between the two countries, which would enable study visits, research, drafting of regulations and connecting youth organizations of the two countries.

Minister Osmanović particularly emphasized the problem of young people leaving Bosnia and Herzegovina and the fact that the BiH diaspora in Austria is extremely numerous.

"A great problem is that a large number of people from BiH, when they acquire the right to Austrian citizenship, renounce their BiH citizenship, thereby our country loses a significant part of young and educated population," emphasized Osmanović.

Ambassador of the Republic of Austria Ulrike Hartmann expressed the view that this issue could be resolved by BiH's membership in the European Union, and expressed Austria's full support for the accession process.

Minister Osmanović and Ambassador Hartmann agreed that cooperation between BiH and Austria in the field of culture is at high level, and that procedure for drafting a protocol on sports cooperation between the Ministry of Civil Affairs of BiH and the competent Ministry of Sport of the Republic of Austria should be initiated, the BiH Ministry of Civil Affairs announced.
