Krišto and Špirić participate in European Conference of Parliament Speakers

SARAJEVO, October 24 (FENA) - Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH PA) Borjana Krišto and Deputy Speaker of the House of Peoples of BiH PA Nikola Špirić participate in the European Conference of Speakers of Parliaments of the Council of Europe member states, which opened today in Strasbourg. 

The two-day conference, marking the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Council of Europe, was opened by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) President Liliane Maury Pasquier and Council of Europe Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Burić.

Speaking within the theme "Our Common European Home - the Next 70 Years", Krišto emphasized that precisely on the basic principles and values of the Council of Europe that, over the past seven decades, Europe has become an area of cooperation and prosperity based on common interests, from areas of open conflict and intolerance.

Recalling the fact that Europe today faces the challenges of globalization, accompanied by the financial, economic, demographic and migrant crises, Krišto stressed that dialogue is a powerful instrument for tackling all these challenges.

According to Krišto, due to the specificity of the internal organization of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is structured as a state of three constituent peoples and other citizens, establishing dialogue and reaching compromise and consensus on key issues are of utmost importance for functioning of BiH and its path towards Euro-Atlantic integration. As one of the most important issues that BiH faces in its reform and integration path, Krišto emphasized changes of the electoral legislation in terms of implementing basic democratic standards by respecting the democratically expressed political will of all three constituent peoples in BiH.

Špirić addressed the conference participants as part of a topic dedicated to Implementing the UN 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals: contribution by Parliaments.

According to Špirić, for BiH, the UN Agenda 2030 applies equally to peace and development, which is why the Integrated Analysis of Sustainable Development Challenges in BiH starts with the fact that it is a post-conflict country with aspirations to become a member of the European Union (EU). In this regard, Špirić said, key development trends, opportunities and obstacles were identified and four directions for sustainable development in BiH were outlined - good governance and public sector management, smart growth, investing in a new social contract and human capital for the 21st century, PR Office of the BiH PA announced.
