FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, October 24 (FENA) - FBiH Minister of Defense and Veterans and Disabled Veterans of the Liberation War Salko Bukvarević today paid tribute to the killed Bosniaks in Stupni Do and Vareš.

The 26th anniversary of crimes against Bosniak civilians committed by members of the Croat Defense Council (HVO) was marked in the village of Stupni Do near Vareš.

At dawn on 23 October 1993, special units of the HVO, the Apostles and the Maturice unit killed 38 people, including 17 women, five children and a number of elderly persons. They burned down 58 houses and a local mosque and seven persons in Vareš.

Today, at the marking of this sad anniversary, family members, citizens of Vareš and numerous delegations, including the delegations of the governments of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Zenica-Doboj Canton, led by FBiH Minister for Veterans Affairs Salko Bukvarević and Prime Minister of ZDC Mirza Ganić, laid flowers at the memorial fountain and paid tribute to the murdered civilians.

“By coming to this place to mark this anniversary, in the silence that surrounds us, we come to know what was happening in Bosnia and Herzegovina and that 26 years after these events, we are ready to lend a hand to each other and move on. There are no words that can be a comfort to the families who have lost their loved ones or anything that we can say to bring them back, but no one has the right to forget this crime because forgetting the crime gives birth to a new crime,” said Minister Bukvarević.

He added that the gathering in Stupni Do "proves that the suffering of Bosniaks in this place has not been forgotten and that together we send a message to never allow such crimes to happen to anyone.

Zenica-Doboj Canton Prime Minister Mirza Ganić said that only a few people were held responsible for this crime, as part of a joint criminal enterprise adjudicated before The Hague Tribunal, and that justice would not be satisfied until the last perpetrator is brought to justice.
