ZENICA, October 16 (FENA) - Department of Health Ecology and Hygiene of the Institute for Health and Food Safety of Zenica (INZ) today marked the World Food Day with one-day seminar on "Healthy eating - the challenge of the modern world".

“Healthy nutrition is currently the biggest public health challenge, therefore on this day we paid attention to healthy nutrition,” said Dr. Aida Filipović-Hadžiomeragić from the FBiH Institute of Public Health, who, along with INZ experts, was a lecturer at this seminar.

She pointed out that Bosnia and Herzegovina is facing the problem of poor diets and obesity, while the problem of malnutrition is a minor problem. A particular problem is the lack of vitamins and minerals in the diet.

“At the moment we are trying to change menu for children in places where we, as a state, entity, public, can react, and these are, of course, educational institutions,” emphasized Filipović-Hadžiomerović.

The target group is pre-school children, as habits and risks are formed at an early age, but also because they are available in kindergartens.

“We made guidelines for the nutrition of children from 0 to 3 years, and then from 0 to 19 years, which means that the entire child population is covered. We used background information related to the situation of nutrition and eating habits of both our and countries in the region, but also European and world guidelines,” adds Filipović-Hadžiomerović.

The third phase of the “Eat Healthy-Grow Healthy” project is being implemented in kindergartens with the support of UNICEF. Filipović-Hadžiomerović warns that a study of population nutrition from 0 to 5 years has shown a trend of obesity.

“We have over 17.5 percent of children who are overweight or obese. There is an upward trend, because four years ago, there were about 12 percent of obese children. In the case of malnutrition, it is 2 to 2.5 percent, except in the vulnerable groups, such as the Roma population. The percentage is slightly higher than 9 percent,” said Filipović-Hadžiomerović, noting that 22 pecent of population in BiH is obese, which makes us at the European top.
