SARAJEVO, October 15 (FENA) - The International Day of Rural Women, October 15, was marked in Sarajevo with a mini-fair of products from 11 companies and cooperatives working with women from rural communities.

The fair is being held today at the Importanne Trade Center, with items mostly from an assortment of organically produced food or medicinal herbs.

This marking of the International Day of Rural Women has been supported by Farm II project and funded by the Government of Sweden and the USAID.

At the opening of the fair, Torgny Svenungsson of the Development Cooperation Department at the Embassy of Sweden in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as Kent Larson of the USAID project, emphasized that the Farming Development Project has been funded for years by the Swedish government and USAID to strengthen economic opportunities and jobs for farmers to achieve the highest possible production and export.

On the occasion of the International Day of Rural Women we pay considerable attention to the women as the target group, as women face huge challenges in agricultural production since, despite the legal framework, they do not have the same rights as male members in terms of ownership of agricultural real estate.

They are limited by traditional norms and roles in the household, which in combination with social circumstances limits their entrepreneurial potential.

Under the Farm II project, in which 33 percent of beneficiaries are women, in 2016, a gender study was conducted and accompanying strategy pointing to the important role of women in sustainable development.

One of the participants in the mini fair at the Importanne Center, Maja Kantar from the Kantar Homemade, Sarajevo, together with her husband founded a company that produces extra virgin olive oil, as well as jams and syrups in collaboration with women, owners of small farms where they grow the fruits.

The impression of this entrepreneur is that none of the women she works with is less privileged in the business than the male counterparts, and that all of them are always ready to cooperate in doing business.

Daliborka Ljubojević from Women's Initiative Luna from Rudo congratulated all women entrepreneurs on the occasion of International Day of Rural Women as an example of promoting the entrepreneurial spirit of women in rural communities.

The International of Rural Women, October 15, was established at the initiative of the United Nations General Assembly.

More than 60 percent of the population in Bosnia and Herzegovina lives in villages or local communities with hundreds to several thousand inhabitants, emphasize the implementers of the Farm II Farming Development Project and add that by excluding women from the economy, we exclude half of the population from participation in development, innovation, investment and production.

“This also limits the chance for general economic progress of Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, with gradual steps forward we are changing the situation,” emphasize the implementers of this project.
