SARAJEVO, October 3 (FENA) - Bosnia and Herzegovina's declared foreign policy direction is membership of the European Union. Despite negative rhetoric in Bosnia and Herzegovina, I think the country is still on the right track, High Representative Valentin Inzko said in an interview for the daily newspaper Oslobodjenje today.

He also added that it is obvious that more focus is needed on forward-looking programs.

Former Head of EU Delegation and EU Special Representative to BiH Lars-Gunnar Wigemark tried to help to form the government. The three leaders' Agreement lasted for a month, followed by threats from SNSD leader Milorad Dodik that the RS National Assembly would issue the decision to abolish state defense, tax and judicial institutions.

Inzko says he will not speculate on his steps, which mainly depend on the moves of BiH politicians.

“I would like to remind you of the announcement by the PIC Steering Board following these statements. The PIC Steering Board urged political leaders not to take steps that would endanger, weaken or obstruct functioning of state institutions. According to the PIC Steering Board, entities and institutions must comply with existing regulations and legal arrangements. Reforms such as defense reform, establishment of a single High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council at the state level and Indirect Taxation Authority have been implemented with the full support of the entity and state parliaments. The PIC Steering Board has made it clear that the BiH Constitution, existing laws and the integrity of state-level institutions must be fully respected,” the High Representative said.

Asked if he thinks Dodik would "go all the way" and where the end of this situation is, Inzko replied that Dodik should be asked about that.

“I personally hope that BiH will go to the end when it comes to its path of EU integration. Of course, that path must be accelerated. Politicians need to reach necessary compromises and reforms that bring BiH closer to the EU. The international community is ready to support BiH and help it along the way,” he said, among other things. Inzko also positively commended the recent statement of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić after meeting with the RS party leaders in Belgrade on complying with Dayton Peace Agreement and the state of BiH.
