BiH PA MPs delegation visits Joint Police Cooperation Center in Trebinje

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, September 2 (FENA) - A delegation of the BiH Parliamentary Assembly visited today the Joint Center for Police Cooperation between BiH, Montenegro and the Republic of Serbia (JCPC) in Trebinje.

The Parliamentary Assembly delegation was comprised of Šemsudin Mehmedović, Lazar Prodanović, Edita Đapo, Saša Magazinović, and Jasmin Emrić.

The MPs delegation gathered around the Integration and Security Issues Club of the BiH Parliamentary Assembly, supported by the International Republican Institute (IRI), met in Trebinje with Director of the BiH Border Police Zoran Galić, Deputy Director Fahrudin Halač, Assistant Director for Organization and Operations Dragan Kulić and Chief of Čapljina South Field Office Robert Perić.

The BiH Border Police officers working at JCPC presented to the MPs the competencies, activities, and results that they achieve in cooperation with colleagues from the Ministries of Interior of Montenegro and Serbia.

At a meeting with MPs, Director Zoran Galić once again highlighted the problems that the BiH Border Police members face in their daily work, especially because of the complex situation with illegal migration in 2018 and 2019.

For a more concrete response to the problem of illegal migration, he stressed, we need amendments to the Act on Foreign Nationals, the Asylum Act and to the regulations to increase the possibilities of deployment and engagement of officers at the border with Serbia and Montenegro.

"The situation requires the maximum involvement of all institutions in charge of solving this problem at the border and within BiH, as well as international organizations. So far, we have not had enough support, it is incomparable to the support received by police authorities in neighboring countries, and the situation is getting more complicated each day, especially in the eastern part of BiH and in the Krajina region," said the BiH Border Police Director.

He added that the BiH Border Police has some equipment procured from its own budget and donated by international partners, but that more sophisticated specialized equipment is needed for serious response at the border, which is available to the police authorities of neighboring and EU countries.

The meeting was also a chance to discuss the problems of poor infrastructure at border crossings and the insufficient number of BiH Border Police officers.

The BiH PA representatives agreed that the BiH Border Police need to be strengthened operationally and that support must be more concrete.

They thanked the BiH BP for the hospitality and announced the continuation of cooperation with this state-level police agency in order to tackle the crisis of illegal migration in BiH, stated the BiH Border Police.
