BANJA LUKA, August 31 (FENA) - Reintroduction of the position of the US Special Representative for the Western Balkans is an indication that the United States wants to expedite the resolution of major outstanding issues in the region, stated the Foreign Minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina Igor Crnadak in a statement to FENA.

Matthew Palmer, a US diplomat was appointed to the position.

Crnadak points out that Palmer's main task will be to engage in the dialogue between Serbia and Kosovo, that is, the resolving of the problem of Kosovo, but he will surely be active in other countries, including Bosnia and Herzegovina.

"Palmer is well aware of the situation in this part of Europe, he speaks Serbian and has strong family ties to the region and I hope he will be successful in his new job," said Crnadak.

Crnadak believes that "strengthening Palmer's role is important to us", as he said, because "he respects Republika Srpska and the Dayton structure, as well as the need to resolve matters solely through compromise in BiH."

The US State Department has announced that Palmer, who is currently holding the post of the deputy assistant secretary of state for Europe and Eurasia, will also be tasked with "leading our efforts in strengthening the US involvement in supporting peace, stability, and progress in the region."
