Archaeologists discover intriguing figurine at Kopilo site near Zenica

FENA Vehid Begunić

ZENICA, August 30 (FENA) - Austrian and Bosnian archaeologists, who have been exploring prehistoric areas around Zenica for the past month, with a sensational discovery today are completing this year's explorations of prehistoric settlements in Zenica.

“We were fortunate to find, in addition to the usual findings inside and around the settlements – pottery, tools, weapons ... at the end of our research at the Kopilo site, a clay figurine of an anthropomorphic portrayal, with male genitals and a facial image that is particularly schematized,” told FENA today Dr. Mario Gavranović, Deputy Director of the Institute for European and Oriental Archeology of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna, which funded the research.

He added that their surprise was huge because no such finding has been discovered at all in the area of central Bosnia.

“It is a sensation for sure because it's something new. It is as if now we have opened a new window into the past,” said delighted Gavranović, who is convinced that the mentioned figurine will reveal to them some new insight into the life of the then man.

“It will help us learn about the daily lives of these people, but also about their cults, beliefs, and maybe even religion. The figurine has no practical purpose but was made for the purpose of someone’s belief,” Gavranović is convinced.

He recalls that the figurine is also interesting in terms of the historical period they deal with, since the Bronze Age and the Iron Age, have a characteristic of complete lack of figural representations.

“All the decorations we know from that period were geometric, schematized, abstract ... However, this figurine shows that even then, there was certainly an awareness of the representation of the man in some metaphorical form,” Gavranović points out.

The newly discovered figurine, Gavranović notes, has not yet been completely cleaned up, therefore, the full picture of it will be obtained after further analysis.

Figurines similar to this one were found only in northwestern Bosnia, in the settlement of Ripač near Bihać.

Gavranović will present all the findings from the sites in the settlements of Gradišće and Kopilo in the past month, at the European Meeting of Archaeologists in Bern.
