Efforts to enable import of cars in BiH with minimum Euro 5 standard

SARAJEVO, April 28 (FENA) - Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of BiH Mirko Šarović told FENA it is necessary to work on increasing the allowed standard in auto market in BiH and to enable more favorable import of hybrid and electric vehicles, which has not been the case.

Trend is to stop using diesel vehicles as much as possible, and replace them with electric vehicles.

To this end the Ministry launched initiative to have duty free import of vehicles.

“This will have a strong impact on environmental protection. It is known that vehicles affect pollution in the entire country with 30 percent, which is one third. Now we can import cars with Euro 4 standard, which is not good for the environment,” said Šarović.

He added that a new decision of the ministry will be delivered to the Council of Ministers of BiH in the next few days, which refers to a possibility of import of cars in BiH with minimum of Euro 5 standard.

This decision was originally launched by Chamber of Economy of the Federation of BiH, whose Vice President Mirsad Jašarspahić told FENA that agreement was reached with Chamber of Economy of RS.

“Apart from ecological aspect, we want to limit Euro 4 for import of used cars and Euro 5 for new cars. This way we will improve standard in environmental protection,” said Jašarspahić.

He warned it is necessary to find a way to avoid BiH from becoming a landfill of old cars from the EU.

“The fact that there is no car brand in Europe without a part produced in BiH says enough about development of automotive industry in our country. Considering that more and more manufacturers are moving their plants and the Balkan region is their ideal location it is necessary to create a critical mass of sufficient number of suppliers and producers. That is why it is our goal to additionally develop a car industry group, which is a precondition to place a big brand to the area of the region,” underlined Jašarspahić.
