SARAJEVO, March 6 (FENA) - The Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina have significantly increased the number of women who account for 7.28 percent of the total number of members of the armed forces, it was noted today at the conference “Women, Peace and Security - Chiefs of Staff Network,” which opened today in Sarajevo.

The three-day conference, organized by the BiH Armed Forces and the Embassy of Great Britain to BiH, aims to consider the implementation of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on gender equality, improving status and greater representation of women in institutions and organizations of defense and security.

Chief of the BiH AF Joint Staff Senad Mašović pointed out that women in BiH AF are represented in categories of soldiers, non-commissioned officers and officers with the prospect of becoming generals in the future.

“Within the BiH AF, men and women perform tasks in peacekeeping missions all over the world and represent BiH and implement the Resolution in the best possible manner,” said Mašović.

He reminded of the fact that the UN, recognizing that it was not able to stop the war, adopted Resolution 1325 that should protect the most vulnerable in the population during armed conflicts, children, women and elderly persons, and that through this initiative, all members have been obliged to understand and implement gender equality.

He added that BiH, as a member of the UN and as a potential member of NATO, is obliged to implement directives in the implementation of this resolution.

The UK Ambassador to BiH Matthew Field pointed out that the United Kingdom is fully committed to the implementation of the UN Security Council Resolution and that a stronger role of women is crucial for their armed forces to be as efficient and representative as possible.

“This leads to better operations, increasing human potential and achieving lasting peace. The United Kingdom fully supports the work on this important segment,” said Ambassador Field.
