SARAJEVO, December 20 (FENA) - Municipal Mayor of Novi Grad Sarajevo Semir Efendić and members of the delegation from Azerbaijan and the Republic of Turkey, who are paying a three-day visit to Novi Grad municipality in Sarajevo and BiH, visited Friendship Park in Dobrinja, where they honored genocide victims in BiH and victims of the massacre committed against civilians in Azerbaijan province of Khojaly and laid flowers at the memorial.
Delegation is composed of mayors of five municipalities from Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, which the delegation of Novi Grad municipality visited in August this year. It is led by Fahri Solak, Secretary General of the Union of Turkish World Municipalities (TDBB) and Tamraz Tağıyev, president of Union of Azerbaijan city municipalities.
Friendship between people of Azerbaijan and BiH dates back from twinning of the city of Sarajevo and Baku 40 years ago. This friendship was built during 1992, when we went through similar ordeal, slaughter of civilians in Khojaly and aggression against our country. This period is symbolized by a monument in Friendship Park which shows two mothers, one from BiH and other from Azerbaijan.
Construction of the Park and monument is financed by Heydar Aliyev Fund from the Republic of Azerbaijan, and it was opened by Lejla Aliyev, daughter of president of the Republic of Azerbaijan in 2012.
Zakir Yafarov, Municipal Mayor of Yasamal emphasized they came to BiH as guests of the Union of Turkish Municipalities.
"This visit was very useful for us and we are sorry Bosnian people went through the same tragedy as Azerbaijani people. We talked about cooperation between the two municipalities," stated Yafarov.
