The list of works of art stolen from BiH contains 109 pieces of artwork (VIDEO)

FENA Press release

TUZLA, October 18 (FENA) - The Center against Art Smuggling is the organizer of a conference that deals with the topic of illegal smuggling and tracking of art, touching upon this topic at this level for the first time in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The aim is to exchange experiences, define the goals of future action, as well as to review the current situation, especially in the legislation. According to Interpol, 6.3 percent of the total illegal trade in art works in the world takes place in Southeast Europe.

Enver Mulabdić was expelled from his hometown of Bosanski Novi in 1992. In his apartment he left valuable art works. The apartment was under watched over by his neighbor, who moved to Novi Sad in 1993. He also took with him Mulabdić’s private collection, which Mulabdić started in 1977. Among the stolen works are four that were declared the National Monument of BiH. These works, says Mulabdić, are now in possession of a private collector Đuro Popović in Novi Sad and have been declared as the National Monuments of Serbia.

“In terms of addressing the competent institutions, everything possible has been done and the works are on the list in Lyon. Sarajevo Interpol office sent a request to Belgrade, and that is where we stand now,” said Mulabdić.

The Artworks Anti-Smuggling Center in Tuzla published a database of stolen artwork from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

There are 109 pieces on this list, among which are four paintings from the personal collection of Enver Mulabdić. On the Interpol page, Bosnia and Herzegovina is searching for 27 pieces of artwork, and according to the data of this organization, 6.3 percent of the total illegal trade in artworks in the world takes place in the region of Southeast Europe.

The monetary value of artwork stolen from BiH is immeasurable. Still, the greatest damage is done to the citizens and the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina who have been stripped of the artworks that are its national treasure, but also a part of BiH's cultural identity.
