SARAJEVO, August 31 (FENA) - Former soldier of the Army of Republika Srpska, Rade Garić has been charged with persecuting Bosniaks by committing murders, torture, rape and other crimes in the Vlasenica and Srebrenica areas in 1992 and 1995.

The state court in Sarajevo on Friday confirmed the indictment of Rade Garić, the former commander of the Interventions Squad of the Bosnian Serb Army’s Vlasenica Brigade, for crimes against humanity, BIRN reports.

Garić is accused of having persecuted the Bosniak civilian population in the Vlasenica municipality through murders, torture, rape, forcible disappearances, the deprivation of liberty and the causing of physical and mental injuries from April 1992 to the end of that year.

He has also been charged with committing persecution through murders, torture and the causing of physical and mental injuries during a widespread and systematic attack on the Bosniak civilian population of Srebrenica by the Bosnian Serb Army and interior ministry forces from July 6, 1995 to August that year.

“Garić has been charged with participating in the murder of 23 Bosniaks after the fall of Srebrenica in the summer of 1995,” the Bosnian state prosecution said in a previous statement when announcing the indictment.

Garić is due to enter his plea in the upcoming period.
