SARAJEVO, August 8 (FENA) - Alija Izetbegović was many things in one, a Bosniak, a Muslim, a Bosnian and a European, and he left us in hope that we will manage to be all those things. Let us be what we really are, but it is time for us to be Bosnians to an even gretaer extent, and that is the only part that we have not yet fulfilled, emphasized the Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Bakir Izetbegović at the "Bastion of Light" event as part of the marking of the "Open Doors Days 2018" last night at the plateau of the  amphitheater of the Kovači Memorial Complex in Sarajevo, on the occasion of the 93rd birthday of the first president of the Presidency of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina Alija Izetbegović, organized by the City of Sarajevo and the "Alija Izetbegović" Museum.

Bakir Izetbegović thanked all those who remembered to mark his father's birthday, not only in Sarajevo but also in Bosnian Krajina.

“Usually, we mark the day of his death and we remember something new. For Muslims, it is also a festive day because, when my father got closure and rounded up his life’s work, I felt sad, but also solemn, because his struggle and great suffering had ended," Izetbegović said.

He stressed that the memory of Alija Izetbegović is in fact a memory of the heroic age witnessed by many, some participated in it, and some contributed.

Izetbegović said that we have restored Bosnia and Herzegovina as a state, the army, the identity of Bosniaks, the name of language, equality and freedom, and that much was achieved in the time marked by Alija Izetbegović. Remembering him, he added, means remembering our pride and heroic times.

Izetbegović pointed out that some will say that BiH is still divided into entities, that the army is not strong, but, he says, Bosnia and Herzegovina is an independent state recognized by the United Nations and it has only one army and not three of them.

“The judgments of the Constitutional Court reinstated the Bosniak people as constituent people on each and every square of this country, and the same goes for all of the three peoples, but we must continue working in this direction. Alija’s thoughts were always the light. In the time when faith was presented as something dark, Alija defended faith and he succeeded. Alija was a fighter who never attacked anyone, he was like a fort, patient, strong, and persistent,” said Izetbegović.

Although he died 15 years ago, a leader and politician Alija Izetbegović is still very much alive through his deeds, concluded Bakir Izetbegović in his address at the anniversary marking.
