Ron Haviv receives award in Sarajevo for contributing to the culture of memory

SARAJEVO, April 1 (FENA) - Ron Haviv, a world-renowned photojournalist whose camera has captured and showed to the world numerous war images from Bosnia and Herzegovina, is the recipient of the award given by the Memory Module Project in Sarajevo, for the first time since its existence, for a special contribution to preserving the culture of memory.

The recognition to Ron Haviv was awarded on Friday evening at the ceremony held at the City Hall by by Nihad Kreševljaković, one of the creators of the Memory Module Program.

The award is in a form of a glass statue with a characteristic hollow point in the middle resembling a bullet hole.

At the beginning of the 1990s, Ron Haviv wanted his photos to go around the world and to help a country that was being killed through aggression, and at the ceremony at the City Hall, Haviv in his speech apologized that the needed help from the world did not come sooner.

An exhibition of his rarely seen and some of the unseen photographs from the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, full of unimaginable human suffering, has been displayed at the City Hall; from Bijeljina at the very beginning of the war, when, despite the threats by Arkan's Tigers, he succeeded, for example, to capture the last moments of one of the victims, then another one from Sarajevo, where he also captured widespread human suffering, tears and blood, and from the Trnopolje concentration camp, where he took photos of starving people with hopelessness in their eyes.

Ron Haviv is an American, born in 1965. He is a world-renowned and award-winning photojournalist who, with his work, promotes humanity and human rights, and is one of the most significant contemporary photographers.

The photos he took documented the atrocities and cruelty that the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, were exposed to, as well as the citizens of other countries affected by war, and these photos emerged in hope of provoking a reaction that would lead to ending the suffering.

Number guests and officials at the City Hall welcomed Ron Haviv with a long applause.
