BiH Border Police receives donation of specialist equipment worth 226,000 euros

FENA

SARAJEVO, March 26 (FENA) - Specialist equipment, endoscope and detector worth 226,000 euros were donated to the BiH Border Police within the CIAT project of the UNDP and the Federal Republic of Germany. The Border Police Director, Zoran Galić, said this donation would further strengthen the capacities of this police agency.

“This will be reflected not only in the fight against illicit arms trafficking but also in the more effective prevention of illegal migration, the fight against terrorism, the suppression of drug trafficking, human trafficking and trafficking in excise goods, as well as the fight against all forms of cross-border crime,” Mr. Galić emphasized.

During the ceremony of equipment handover, he also said that today's donation was one in a series of numerous, valuable donations because UNDP and FR Germany had signed the Agreement for Countering Illicit Arms Trafficking in BiH, or CIAT project.

Mr. Galić explained that the main goal of the project was to enable the BiH Border Police to prevent, combat and identify trafficking in firearms, ammunition, explosives from and through BiH.

As he said, the total value of the project is about 550,000 euros, which is funded by Germany through UNDP.

“Of this amount, 226,000 euros have been spent on detectors for explosives and drugs, and the most up-to-date endoscopes, devices that allow an optical check of the inaccessible interior of the vehicle,” he explained.

He pointed out that a full range of training would be carried out within the project and a number of missing procedures will be developed with the aim of adequately and effectively combating illicit arms trafficking.

In addition to this, about 1,300 police officers of the BiH Border Police will be trained and, in addition to experts engaged by the UNDP, the Border Police officers will actively participate in the implementation of training and drafting of procedures.

The Border Police Director said that so far they have achieved solid results that are twice as good compared to 2016, but that, however, activities in the fight against illicit arms trafficking must be improved.

German Ambassador to BiH Christiane Hohmann said that the aim of the project was to help the Border Police by donating equipment, but also by giving knowledge, in order to safeguard BiH borders more efficiently.

She mentioned that another reason for helping the BiH Border Police to guard its borders well was the fact that the borders of the European Union will be well guarded at the same time.

She concluded that this cooperation was beneficial for both parties and that this form of assistance to the Border Police means also bringing it to European standards, which is one way of helping BiH in its steps towards EU accession.

The attendees were addressed by the United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in BiH Sezin Sinanoglu, who pointed out that the Border Police was on the front lines in the fight against attempts at terrorist attacks, the use of weapons and explosives.

She stressed the close cooperation with the BiH Armed Forces, various security agencies, including the Border Police.

“The border management is crucial in the fight against illicit arms and smuggling, and in general, in maintaining security in BiH,” concluded Ms. Sinanoglu, with the message that cooperation with the BiH Border Police will continue.
