Borovac: Racism is often rooted in fear, but it must not be tolerated

SARAJEVO, March 21 (FENA) - Minister for Human Rights and Refugees of Bosnia and Herzegovina Semiha Borovac called on the occasion of the International Day Against Racism and Discrimination that all in Bosnia and Herzegovina truly and resolutely fight against all forms of discrimination in order to build a society of equal opportunities in which compliance with international and European standards is a practice, not an exception.

“For us in Bosnia and Herzegovina, this is an opportunity to recall the values ​​of tolerance and coexistence and democratic values, but also the importance of more effective implementation of the standards that we have taken on under the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD), and that all institutions and organizations ensure compliance with the recommendations of the European Commission on the Elimination of Racial and All Forms of Discrimination (ECRI), especially in the context of the European Integration Process, it is stated in a press release from the Ministry.

In accordance with the recommendations of the bodies of the UN and the European Union, the primary task of the authorities of Bosnia and Herzegovina is to resolve the issue of active and passive voting rights as soon as possible, in accordance with the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights, to complete process of sustainable return of refugees and displaced persons, mechanisms for the prevention of hate speech, eliminating discrimination and segregation in education, improving the socio-economic position of Roma, asylum seekers and persons under subsidiary protection, improve the protection of LGBTI persons and ensure the strengthening of the capacities of the Ombudsman Institution for Human Rights and improve the promotion of human rights and activities in the fight against all types of discrimination.

Racial or any other form of discrimination must not be the basis for the social position of an individual. It is precisely on this that the principle of equality that is the basis of the fight against all forms of discrimination.

Racism is often rooted in the fear of unknown, different, and the other. We must not, by any means, justify or tolerate it as something that happens to someone else and, unfortunately, no society is immune to it.

Marking the International Day against Racism and Discrimination, 21 March, is a reminder of the fundamental values ​​of the Charter of the United Nations and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which guarantee the human right to a dignified life, a life without racism and discrimination.
