ICRC – New equipment to facilitate the process of search for missing persons

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, March 14 (FENA) - The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) donated today 15 new laptops to the Institute for Missing Persons of Bosnia and Herzegovina, intended for the regional and field centers of the Institute.

The donated equipment will significantly improve the processing of data collected by ICRC for the purpose of locating individual and mass graves, the ICRC said.

As a neutral and independent organization, the ICRC has access to international archives under the jurisdiction of The Hague Tribunal and uses them to access information for the humanitarian purpose of finding missing persons.

In the past two years alone, ICRC experts have collected and processed more than 50,000 pages of documents related to the conflict in Bosnia and Herzegovina, of which 12,400 have so far been handed over to the Missing Persons Institute for further analysis and potential activities.

“As recent discoveries of new mass graves have shown, further investment can bring significant results. Therefore, the ICRC will significantly expand its research team and scope of its activities, and seek access to other international and local archives throughout the region,” emphasized the ICRC Missing Persons Coordinator for the Western Balkans, Fabien Bourdier.

Facing a steady decline in number of identified persons over the recent years, the ICRC has decided to intensify its efforts in the next five years and take all possible steps to find as many missing persons as possible.

Bourdier said that speeding up the search and identification process and support to the families require a true commitment of the institutions and joint effort across the region.

According to the ICRC data, there are still about 6,700 registered missing persons on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina
