SARAJEVO, March 8 (FENA) - French Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Guillaume Rousson, told FENA that he believed that the position of women in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also in France, is largely conditioned by tradition, habits and various burdensome circumstances and that they do not have access to the same professional opportunities as men.

He said this during a debate of prominent BiH women intellectuals entitled "Women in the world of science and their contribution to BiH society", organized in Sarajevo by the French Embassy to BiH on the occasion of March 8, the International Women's Day.

Ambassador Rousson emphasized that finding solutions to such a problem "requires time and work" but that one should persevere in this struggle and take advantage of moments like March 8, the International Women's Day.

For this reason, Ambassador Rousson added, the French Embassy has prepared two events on the occasion of March 8. One is a debate of prominent BiH women intellectuals and the other a screening of the film "Men and Women" by Frédérique Bedos, which will be screened this evening at the French Institute in Sarajevo.

The Ambassador emphasized that the conclusions of today's debate should be sent to the competent institutions, the BiH Ministry of Civil Affairs, the European Union Delegation to BiH, UNDP and UNESCO.

The winner of the 2017 State Award for International Achievements in Science, a member of the BiH Academy of Sciences, the European Academy of Sciences and founder of the Institute "Nalaz" Mirsada Hukić believes that the position of women in BiH is a very complex issue, because today everyone is discriminated against in BiH and not just women.

She stressed that there were many unemployed persons in BiH, among which a large number are women, and that their “freedom” implies economic independence as well.

"Women are discriminated against as mothers too, they are deprived of the most valuable thing they have. Young women cannot bear children because they lose jobs," Ms. Hukić said.
