Bevanda: Projects with KfW must not be brought into question

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, March 7 (FENA) - The Ministry of Finance and Treasury of Bosnia and Herzegovina will do everything to avoid loss of funds, endangering of strategic projects, or disturbing long-standing cooperation with the German government and the German Development Bank KfW, stated the Deputy Chairman of the BiH Council of Ministers and Minister of Finance and Treasury Vjekoslav Bevanda.

To that end, the Minister hosted a meeting today with Director of the German Development Bank KfW in BiH, Matthias Schmidt-Rosen, in order to eliminate the problems and prevent the suspension of projects worth millions of euros financed by the German Government.

Bevanda stressed that the cooperation of the BiH Ministry of Finance and Treasury with the KfW and the German Government has been long-standing one, extremely significant and successful. Eight projects are currently being implemented in the total value of 336 million euros.

By inspecting projects that have been negotiated and supervised, and through contacts with KfW, the Sector for Relations with Financial Institutions of the Ministry of Finance and Treasury of BiH has noticed the problem of suspension of lucrative projects and loss of approved funds.

Bevanda and the leadership of KfW have been informed that the Public Enterprise "Elektroprivreda BiH" has decided to abandon the project of reconstruction of HPP "Salakovac", which has already been agreed with the envisaged loan funds of 45 million euros and a grant of one million euros.

It was pointed out that the reconstruction of HPP "Salakovac" was foreseen by the interstate agreements concluded in 2011 and 2012 through the program "Hydro Power Potential Development", and the obligations under these agreements expire at the end of 2019.

Unless a loan agreement is signed within the deadline, BiH will lose millions of funds.

Minister Bevanda pointed out that these are more than strong reasons to organize a meeting with representatives of the Government of the Federation of BiH, Elektroprivreda BiH the Electric and KfW in order to find solutions through alternative projects or the continuation of existing ones, stated the Ministry of Finance and Treasury of BiH.
