Kneissl: BiH politicians must resolve their differences concerning Election Law

FENA

SARAJEVO, February 23 (FENA) - Although BiH political leaders have the support of the European Union, it is extremely important that they themselves do their part, and the area where they can show that they are ready to make efforts and resolve mutual differences is the issue of the Election Law.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Austria Karin Kneissl said this during her first official visit to BiH, where, among others, she met with members of the BiH Presidency, the BiH Minister of Foreign Affairs and religious leaders.

She said that during her meetings with BiH officials, she had always made it clear that it is up to the political leaders of BiH to reach a consensus on some important issues, above all, the Election Law.

“This is some sort of a starting point for other reform processes,” the Austrian Minister said, adding that all other issues should also be resolved by reaching a political consensus.

She said BiH was a sovereign country and that it was necessary that its citizens, too, have the mentality of sovereignty.

She added that the topics of her meetings with the representatives of BiH authorities were reform processes, the European Commission's Questionnaire and other issues relevant to the future of BiH.

Expressing understanding of the complexity of the situation in BiH, as well as respect for all events during and before the war, she said that it was necessary to have more political pragmatism in BiH.

“A moment is needed when people will realize that with such pragmatism and leaving aside some other ways of solving problems, one can find the right approach,” Ms. Kneissl said.

Among other things, the Minister reiterated the previous position of the Government of Austria, which is their support for the territorial integrity of BiH.

She reminded that Austria would take over the presidency of the European Union in July and noted that during its presidency, it would continue down the same path set up by the European Commission, as is currently the case with Bulgaria.

In this context, she stressed that it was important for BiH to take advantage of Brussels's interest in this part of Europe. She estimated that some progress had been made, but she again said that the job had to be completed by the BiH politicians, while at the same time they can count on EU’s support.

Ms. Kneissl also met with religious leaders in BiH, and the main theme of these talks was insisting on creating a "civic sense".

She sent out a message to the citizens of BiH that they, along with their culture and civilization and other segments of life, are a part of Europe.
