FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, February 15 (FENA) - Prime Minister of the Sarajevo Canton Elmedin Konaković, British Ambassador to BiH Edward Ferguson and heads of the United Kingdom Government’s program funds Richard Dewdney and Melinda Simmons discussed the cooperation with the British Embassy and the IFC, thanks to which the Sarajevo Canton has managed to achieve economic stability.

The participants of the meeting analyzed the results of the implementation of projects financed by the Good Governance Fund of the British Government, which have been implemented in the past three years in the field of improving the business climate, public administration reform, and strengthening the financial sector both in Sarajevo Canton (SC) and throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Ms. Simmons said that, in addition to good governance and economic development, the greatest attention was paid to fight against corruption, improving the business environment, reforms of the judiciary, the banking sector and energy, as well as strengthening the rule of law and supporting the independence of the media.

Mr. Konaković noted that the SC government in cooperation with the British Embassy and the IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, successfully implemented very important economic reform projects that contributed to the current economic stability.

“The Sarajevo Canton has paid 2.7 billion indirect taxes, which is about 1 billion KM more than what Republika Srpska has paid,” Mr. Konaković emphasized, adding that new small businesses are opening in Sarajevo and that the real sector at the moment has 10,000 new employees, while, in parallel, the number of employees in public administration is decreasing.

He stated that the 2018 Budget was the largest in the history of Sarajevo Canton and was mainly focused on financing capital projects. The money will be invested in the opening of new schools, health institutions, construction of roads.

He also pointed out the significant progress that was achieved through the adoption of the Law on Spatial Planning and Construction, which allowed the necessary documentation for investing in this area to be acquired within 15 days.

Mr. Ferguson praised the work of the Anti-Corruption Team and stressed that their way of work should be an example for other cantons in the Federation of BiH, stated the SC PR Office.
