SREBRENICA, February 8 (FENA) - Minister of Human Rights and Refugees of BiH Semiha Borovac and the United Nations Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide Adama Dieng, today visited the Memorial Center in Potočari where they laid flowers at the memorial, honored the victims of the genocide in Srebrenica, and then met with representatives of the Mothers of Srebrenica Association.
Borovac said that she highly appreciates the decision of the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Adama Dieng, to visit the Potočari Memorial Center and pay homage to the victims of genocide.
“Remembering the victims is an obligation of all those who sincerely believe and work in order to prevent from genocide ever happening to anyone ever again. In addition to all the facts about genocide, today we have the denial of genocide by war criminals and various acts of provocation, and it is very important that we strongly reject those who do such things, because denial of genocide is the last phase of genocide. It is very important that we talk openly, hold dialogues and be ready to accept all the victims regardless of their nationality or ethnicity,” said Borovac.
UN Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide Adama Dieng, told the journalists that he has come to Srebrenica with an enormous feeling of humility. He said that he came to Srebrenica to pay tribute to the vast number of people who lost their lives during the genocide.
“We must always remember the victims of genocide. A large number of families still do not know about the fate of their loved ones and the search for the missing continues as the battle for justice and the battle for bringing perpetrators of the crime to justice continue as well. The survivors deserve our gratitude and we see it on the faces of the mothers that they have never lost faith in justice. The surviving victims give us reason and strength to continue fighting on their behalf,” stressed Dieng.
Dieng believes that justice itself will not bring reconciliation among the communities that are divided, because this cannot be imposed from outside. Real change comes within the society, he said, it can come through the process of accepting the common and continuous heritage and the decision to move forward.
“I am disappointed to hear that some people deny what had happened in Srebrenica. The negation of genocide is a direct obstacle to reconciliation. Glorifying convicted war criminals in this region is unacceptable and it must be utterly condemned. The convicted war criminals are not heroes. The victims, survivors and witnesses of genocide are the real heroes. All victims deserve honor and respect. We pray that the souls of all victims rest in peace, and that Srebrenica never happens to anyone ever again. We will never forget Srebrenica,” said Dieng.
