SARAJEVO, February 5 (FENA) - A total of 77,958 people have renounced the citizenship of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Last year, 4,365 people renounced the BiH citizenship, confirmed the Ministry of Civil Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina in a statement to FENA.

From 2008 to 2015, annually, about 3,500 people renounced the BH citizenship, while in 2016, this was the case with 4,270 people.

As FENA learned, in the process of renunciation of BiH citizenship a party is not obliged to state any other reasons other than the fact that they already have or are guaranteed the acquisition of the citizenship of another state.

“Informally, as the most common reason for renouncing their citizenship, people stated the claims to own property, to facilitate travel, to facilitate studying abroad, to have a more secure working status, and so on,” it was explained.

Citizens of BiH most frequently renounced their citizenship to obtain citizenship in Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Norway, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro, and Denmark in the meantime passed a new law requiring no citizenship waiver.

Bosnia and Herzegovina has agreements on dual citizenship with Sweden, Serbia and Croatia, pointed out the BiH Ministry of Civil Affairs.
