SARAJEVO, February 1 (FENA) - Justice should not be selective and you should never accept divisions, said today Special Adviser to the UN Secretary General for the Prevention of Genocide Adama Dieng after meeting with BiH Minister for Human Rights and Refugees Semiha Borovac.

Dieng is in visit to BiH as part of his visit to the region, which includes visits to Croatia, Montenegro and Serbia.

“I came precisely because of everything that had happened here, and these are cases of severe war crimes, genocide, crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing,” Dieng said and expressed the necessity to work on the prevention of crimes, so that something like this would never happen again.

For this reason, he added, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has set the countries of the Western Balkans as one of the priorities in his work, mostly in the context of prevention of events from the past and the commission of most heinous forms of crimes.

He reminded that Guterres last year also launched an Action Plan for religious leaders who should take a role in preventing incitement to violence that could lead to war crimes.

“We want to prevent further politicization of memorialization and events from the past and the victims themselves through the prevention process. We do not want politicizing, because it contributes to further social and political polarization in the country,” he stressed.

Dieng also added that the communion is built from young age, and that it is very important that the countries that have went through war understand this fact and that they invest effort in building inter-ethnic relations.

Minister of Human Rights and Refugees of BiH Semiha Borovac said that she highly appreciates Dieng’s visit and that they will together visit the memorial centers in Potočari and Donja Gradina and pay homage to the victims of genocide.

She emphasized that they used the meeting to focus on the importance and respect of human rights in BiH, as well as victims of genocide, and concluded that the attitude towards victims is primarily a matter of humanity, awareness and responsibility for the future.

They jointly condemned inappropriate provocations and attempts to deny genocide, which is a clear example of practice that confirms the assertion that denial of crime is the last stage of genocide.

Borovac informed Dieng about the drafting of the law on victims of torture that BiH has not adopted yet, although it is obliged to do so, which should give all victims equal access and scope of rights irrespective of their ethnicity, background, or place of residence.
