SARAJEVO, January 24 (FENA) – Dunja Mijatović won today the second round of elections for the Council of Europe’s Human Rights Commissioner.
Ms. Mijatović won 107 votes in the second round, whereas Pierre-Yves Le Borgn’ from France won 103 votes, confirmed to FENA members of the BiH delegation at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
In yesterday's first round of voting, the French candidate won 105, while Ms. Mijatovic won 76 votes.
Slovenia's Goran Klemenčič dropped after winning 67 votes.
The candidate elected by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe will hold a term of six years without the possibility of renewing the mandate.
During her career, Ms. Mijatović was, among other things, a representative of the Organization for Security and Cooperation (OSCE) for the freedom of the media.
The Council of Europe's Commissioner for Human Rights is an independent and impartial institution established by the Council of Europe in 1999 with a view to raising awareness and respect for human rights in the 47 member states of the Council of Europe.
Latvian Nils Muižnieks held this position until now.
