Borovac - Van der Auweraert: Prevent smuggling of Roma children

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, January 23 (FENA) - Head of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Peter Van der Auweraert said today that it is necessary to include larger spectra of BiH institutions in order to provide an adequate response to the migrant crisis and the increased influx of migrants.

During his today's inaugural visit and working meeting with BiH Minister for Human Rights and Refugees Semiha Borovac, it was underlined that a priority at the moment is to provide additional accommodation for migrants, but also their protection, especially when it comes to the most vulnerable categories such as families, minors without parental or marginalized groups.

Van der Auweraert said that in order to get international assistance, it is essential that BiH has a clear plan of action to tackle the increased influx of migrants to BiH.

The plan is already under development and it is expected that a debate on this issue is to be held soon in the Council of Ministers of BiH.

Special attention has been paid to the growing problem of smuggling of Roma children in Europe.

The IOM announced that in the coming period it will comprise an analysis based on the available data from the region in order to combat this problem and to provide protection for Roma children exposed to such threats.

Borovac stressed that it is necessary to include Roma NGOs in the process of resolving of this problem, as well as the Committee on Roma in the Council of Ministers of BiH.

Van der Auweraert pointed out that BiH is distinguished from other countries on the migrant route by its unique and extremely praiseworthy attitude of members of the Border Police of BiH towards migrants.

According to the statements of migrants, Head of the IOM mission said that BiH border police officers express full respect for their human rights, and treat them with dignity which often has not been the practice of border guards in certain countries on the migrant route, stated the BiH Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees.
