Salkić: Why don't report cards also state 'language of the Serb people'?

BANJA LUKA, January 16 (FENA) - If the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republika Srpska (RS) claims that Bosniak students in that BiH entity should have the "language of the Bosniak people" written in their report cards, then I invite them to write "the language of the Serb people" and not the Serb language for the students of the Serb ethnicity, and then everyone will be equally discriminated, said today the Vice-President of the RS entity, Ramiz Salkić.

“If we want the full, literary and consistent implementation of what is written in the RS Constitution, then it would be logical that, if it says the "language of the Bosniak people”, it should also say the “language of the Serb people” or “the language of the Croat people”. Currently, the discrimination is done only with the Bosniaks with a clear goal,” Mr. Salkić told FENA.

He believes that the denial of the right to the Bosnian language of Bosniak pupils in RS is a continuation of discrimination that has been taking place over the years in this entity's territory with the aim of exerting pressure on these parents and children to leave the RS.

“At this moment we have an apartheid in the educational process. Bosniak parents and their children on the basis of the Constitution have the right to declare their language and they are not asking for anything more than what is written in that document,” the entity vice-president said, supporting the remarks of the representatives of the Bosniak parents in the regional schools in Zvornik, which say that they do not accept that their children’s report cards state that their children attend the "language of the Bosniak people", instead of the "Bosnian language".

He also announced that he would talk again with the Human Rights Ombudsmen of BiH and representatives of organizations dealing with human rights protection, but also stressed that the state should show its strength in this case, and OHR and OSCE should react and protect those who are discouraged by the system.

Mr. Salkić pointed out that the Bosniaks’ problem is not only in the educational process but also in employment in the RS.

“Unfortunately, these days we see a third segment, the organization of paramilitary formations. When the system does not solve the problem at the beginning and does not punish those who are the source of the problem, the problem gets bigger with each day. I hope that this is recognized by those who have missed the opportunity to respond in time and sanction those who create such problems in BiH and that they will begin to do their job,” said Ramiz Salkić.
