Brkić attends meeting of political directors of six Western Balkans contries

SARAJEVO, January 11 (FENA) - Deputy Foreign Minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina Josip Brkić participated in the Second Meeting of Political Directors of six Western Balkan countries (WB6), which was held in Skopje on Thursday, organized by the European External Action Service (EEAS).

The focus of the discussion was on the current situation in the Western Balkans, the perspective of EU membership, regional cooperation, the EU Enlargement Strategy for the Western Balkans, Russia and the Eastern Partnership, energy issues, common foreign and security policy, relations with the People's Republic of China, the Republic of Turkey and the situation in the Middle East.

The participants stressed that the first half of 2018 would be important for the region, and the key events would be the publication of the Enlargement Strategy for the Western Balkans in February, the Integration Process Report for All Countries in April and the EU-Western Balkans Summit in Bulgaria, which presides over the EU Council, in May this year.

In his address, Mr. Brkić pointed out that BiH has continued activities with the countries of the region aimed at improving political dialogue, strengthening cooperation and improving regional co-operation.

During the talks on relations with Russia and the Eastern Partnership, Deputy Minister Brkić emphasized that BiH had good and stable relations with the Russian Federation, which is also one of the members of the Peace Implementation Council. The economic relations between the two countries are continually evolving.

Regarding the internal agenda, Deputy Minister Brkić expressed the expectation that in the forthcoming period Bosnia and Herzegovina will adopt the Framework Energy Strategy for the period until 2035, as well as the Law on Regulator, Transmission and Electricity Market in order to fulfill the obligations from the Third Energy Package and to avoid additional sanctions from the Energy Community.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is committed to the objectives of the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the EU expressed through the Global Strategy, and will contribute to its implementation to the extent granted by its status given by the EU and in accordance with its capacities.

He recalled the goal of BiH to gradually integrate into the European energy market in accordance with obligations arising from Article 107 of the Stabilization and Association Agreement between BiH and the EU.

In the second part of the meeting, the political leaders exchanged views on the situation in the Middle East, relations with the Republic of Turkey and the People's Republic of China.

Deputy Brkić stressed that Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of Turkey had very good and friendly relations. Turkey also plays a very active role in the framework of multilateral cooperation, which is reflected in particular through co-operation with the countries of the Western Balkans.

He said relations with China were an example of friendly and open relations and co-operation. He expressed satisfaction with the cooperation of the two countries through the 16 + 1 mechanism, as a good basis for the development of the economic relations of the two countries. China is investing large financial resources in BiH's energy sector, especially in Thermal Power Plant Bloc 7 Tuzla, the Public Relations Office of the BiH MFA stated.
