SARAJEVO, July 4 (FENA) - Implementation of activities aimed at strengthening the efficiency and quality of the judiciary in Bosnia and Herzegovina through the application of standards and tools developed by the European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice (CEPEJ) was the focus of the visit of CEPEJ representatives, held on July 3 and 4, on the occasion of the announcement of the start of the implementation of the project 'Strengthening the efficiency and quality of justice in Bosnia and Herzegovina'.

The project is implemented within the framework of the joint program of the European Union and the Council of Europe "Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey - HF III".

Special attention during the visit was focused on the presentation of the methodology and standards that CEPEJ applies to improve the work of the judiciary in all 46 member countries of the Council of Europe, and which the HJPC of BiH and the pilot basic and municipal courts from Cazin, Livno, Trebinje, Brčko, and Sokolac need to apply more intensively to strengthen the efficiency and quality of the judicial system in BiH.

The pilot courts were chosen by the Council of Europe based on the geographical representation and size of the courts.

Program Manager at the Delegation of the European Union to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Enrico Visentin, emphasized that the project reflects a joint partnership between the European Union, the Council of Europe, and the European Commission for Efficiency of Justice, which jointly support Bosnia and Herzegovina in its efforts to promote and improve the efficiency of the judicial system.

"This cooperation is key in promoting and preserving the principle of justice throughout our continent, further harmonizing legislation and establishing common standards, and enables the exchange of best practices among member states and the countries of the Western Balkans in the process of EU accession," added Visentin.

Director of the Secretariat of the HJPC of BiH, Admir Suljagić, pointed out that the courts and prosecutor's offices in BiH already apply the CEPEJ standards regarding the efficiency and monitoring of the work of the courts and prosecutor's offices, and that they will continue this practice with the application of the latest standards.

The CEPEJ pointed out that in the coming period, with the application of the developed methodology, standards, and tools, they will work intensively on strengthening the capacity of the judiciary in Bosnia and Herzegovina to collect, process, and analyze data on the functioning of the judicial system and judicial statistics, which will consequently contribute to improving efficiency and the quality of the work of judicial institutions, announced the HJPC.
