SARAJEVO, June 29 (FENA) – General Manager of the Federal News Agency (FENA), Elmir Huremović, said he is satisfied with the organization of the 'Media Innovation and Trends - Media Freedom and Shaping the Future of Media' conference, which was held on Monday in Sarajevo.

As a guest on the "BHT1 Live" show, Huremović pointed out that FENA organized this event as a socially responsible media, taking on the obligation to start a broader discussion about media issues, thus assuming a greater role in uniting the journalist guild.

"We felt an obligation to contribute to the public debate on media issues, with a focus on media development, that is, on the future of media in the world with an emphasis on Bosnia and Herzegovina," said Huremović.

FENA's General Manager emphasized that the conference gathered an impressive number of experts from various fields, professions, academia, associations, and regulatory bodies. He stressed that, through a high-quality discussion, we concluded that this type of event and conversation is necessary for our society.

As Huremović said, media are burdened with problems and do not have time to deal with common topics, unite, or solve issues that are in everyone's interest.

The conference focused on media freedom and shaping the future of media in Bosnia and Herzegovina, freedom of expression, and media ethics.

During his guest appearance on BHT1, the General Manager of the Federal News Agency drew attention to the issue of copyright infringement with an emphasis on social platforms.

He pointed out that the entire media market is facing the issue of copyright, which is a global problem.

"On the one hand, we have news creators and authors who invest human and financial resources to inform the public with accurate and timely information. And on the other hand, we have social platforms with the budgets of the strongest countries in the world that download these contents without knowledge or questions," he added.

As Huremović emphasized, the European Union tried to solve this problem by adopting the copyright directive in 2019, but it was left to all member states to adapt their laws.

"The second conclusion is that in Bosnia and Herzegovina, it is necessary to raise the media literacy of citizens, who then would be educated to distinguish the real source of news from fake news and misinformation," stated Huremović, and announced the organization of annual conferences with a similar theme.

Speaking about the media scene in BiH, Huremović stated that Bosnia and Herzegovina is a fairly liberal market when it comes to media freedom. However, Huremović thinks that this liberal market often has consequences such as the presentation of unverified, inaccurate, biased information.

He thinks that there is self-censorship in our media, stressing that journalists and the journalist community should be freed from the fear of talking about all problems but that all media should have the same criteria, i.e. that they look both affirmatively and critically at phenomena and individuals, and that things should not be generalized.
