SARAJEVO, May 24 (FENA) - Representatives of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) presented today the Analysis of the current digital system in BiH at the conference on digitization and innovation in BiH.

The Analysis showed that the country is well connected to the Internet, but that it has the most Internet services in the region. Also, the absence of a state strategy for broadband access slows down the further development of the information and communication technology network.

This analysis, in the words of Deputy Mission Director for USAID/Bosnia and Herzegovina Robert Lopez, describes how digital systems are used, and how it is possible to strengthen these systems to improve governance, the economy, and social inclusion.

"The conference gathered an impressive group of experts in the field of digital technology, policymakers, people from the business sector, education, and representatives of relevant sectors, who can help us to better understand how digital technology is changing today's world. Digitization has the potential to bring a significantly better life in Bosnia and Herzegovina," said Lopez.

One of the panelists at the conference was the head of the Department for Informatization in the Ministry of Communications and Transport of BiH, Irida Varatanović, who pointed out that this ministry launched various initiatives for the adoption of legal and strategic acts regarding the information society.

The analysis established that there is no single framework in BiH that would regulate citizens' rights and access to digital technology, as well as that government institutions do not use digital technology efficiently.

In general, the level of media literacy is low, which means that citizens do not know necessary to properly analyze the information offered to them via the Internet.

In addition, 28 percent of schools in BiH do not have access to the Internet.

At the conference, it was said that consumers in BiH often do not trust digital services, and do not have enough knowledge about using e-commerce services, such as online banking and shopping, which slows down the adoption of technology that could help economic development.
