SARAJEVO, May 9 (FENA) - A peaceful protest march in support of war-torn Ukraine was held in Sarajevo.

Participants gathered in front of the Eternal Flame and then headed to the Memorial to the murdered children of besieged Sarajevo and laid flowers and paid tribute to the victims.

The participants appealed for an end to the war in Ukraine and the rescue of innocent victims of the horrors of war in Mariupol and other points of this war. They stressed that Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina understand their suffering well because they themselves have been exposed to unspeakable suffering during the last war in the early 1990s.

Participants also stressed the symbolism of holding this event on the day when Europe celebrates the victory over fascism in World War II.

The organizers of the peaceful protest march are associations of war victims in Bosnia and Herzegovina, led by the Mothers of the Srebrenica and Žepa Enclaves Movement. In this initiative, they were joined by representatives of BiH authorities and institutions, as well as other citizens.

On behalf of the organizers, the Mothers of the Srebrenica and Žepa Enclaves Movement, President Munira Subašić told numerous news crews that mothers who know what it means to lose a son in war, what it means to rape her daughter and what it means to survive genocide are sending a message to the world to stop the war in Ukraine.

“The mothers of Srebrenica express their support for the victims and condemn every murder, regardless of who and why it happened. Every man is born with the right to life and no one has the right to take his life,” said Munira Subašić.

Alija Hodžić, vice president of the Association of Parents of Murdered Children in Sarajevo, said, among other things, that there were various people who still carried fascism in their heads and question the actual number of children killed.

Željko Komšić, a member of the BiH Presidency, told reporters that most BiH citizens stand by Ukraine and its people.

“The generation to which I belong and a good part of the people who have gathered here today know well what we are talking about because we have felt it on our own skin. Will it help in a concrete sense, it probably won't, but it is good to know that there are people, states and cultures that stand behind the just struggle between Ukraine and its people,” Komšić said about today's gathering in Sarajevo.

BiH Presidency Chairman Šefik Džaferović explained his presence in the protest march as support for the organizers, associations of war victims, as well as support for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people.

“That is the least we in Bosnia and Herzegovina can do when it comes to the just fight of Ukraine and its people against the invasion and aggression, which, unfortunately, is still being carried out by the Russian Federation. It is a tragedy for the whole world, and I am happy that Bosnia and Herzegovina, despite all internal resistance, has nevertheless stood on the right side of history. Bosnia and Herzegovina has condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine and supported its territorial integrity, joined or wants to join those resolutions that the civilized world has so far condemned in the Russian invasion. I am primarily thinking of the decisions of the United Nations General Assembly and the positions of the European Commission,” Džaferović said.

Answering journalists' questions about messages on the possible formation of a third entity in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Džaferović said that lessons from BiH's past teach that anyone who attacked the sovereignty and territorial integrity of this country ends up "in the dustbin of history" because they did not learn from the past.
