Rich program to mark 30th anniversary of the siege of Sarajevo and Day of City of Sarajevo

SARAJEVO, April 1 (FENA) - Sarajevo Mayor Benjamina Karić and Speaker of the City Council Jasmin Ademović presented today at the City Hall programs marking the 30th anniversary of the siege of Sarajevo and the Day of the City of Sarajevo. 

“The City Hall will be the meeting point on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the beginning of the siege of Sarajevo. The program will begin on Monday, April 4, with an exhibition of photographs entitled 'Siege' by an outstanding photographer Paul Lowe, a British and a Bosnian, with Sarajevo address. He recorded everyday life and the struggle for the survival of Sarajevans during the siege,” said Mayor Karić.

A video screening of "Sarajevo Roses" about war scars will be held at the City Hall on the same evening, starting at 8 pm.

An international conference "30 years later-Sarajevo" has been announced for April 5, in which renowned local and international experts, journalists and academics will participate. Carmel Agius and Serge Brammertz, president and chief prosecutor of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Courts, Rupert Smith, former UNPROFOR commander in Sarajevo, Johann Sattler, Head of the EU delegation to BiH, and Ivo Komšić, a member of the BiH wartime presidency, confirmed their arrival.

“The birthday of the City of Sarajevo, April 6, in addition to paying tribute to the brave people who gave their lives for the freedom and prosperity of this city, we will mark a rich program of cultural and sporting events. For this day, we are also presenting the renovated Bistrik Railway Station to our citizens, which has been enriched with a part of the museum exhibition Walter Defends Sarajevo,” Karić pointed out.

Among the cultural events will be children's performances, exhibitions, concerts, and free tours of seven renowned cultural institutions. 

“In addition to the rich cultural, entertainment and sports program, the City Council of the City of Sarajevo will hold its solemn session on April 6 at 5 pm, dedicated to the Day of the City of Sarajevo. At the solemn session, we will traditionally present the highest recognitions and awards of the City of Sarajevo,” said Speaker of the City Council, Jasmin Ademović.

This year's the April 6th Award of the City of Sarajevo will be presented to Prof. Dr. Rifat Škrijelj for his contribution in the field of science and education and Prim.Dr. Željko Ler for his contribution in the field of health and social protection, as well as the company for transport and services "Alternativa" for its contribution in the field of economy.

The award "Honorary Citizen of the City of Sarajevo" will be presented to Jordi Pujol Puente.
