The European Alliance of News Agencies (EANA) suspends TASS from Alliance

SARAJEVO, February 27 (FENA) - Under the circumstances of the new media regulation enforced by the Russian government (Roskomnadzor), which is heavily restricting media freedom, the Board of EANA considers that TASS finds itself in violation of the purpose of EANA as it is laid out in the Statutes of the Alliance, not being able to provide unbiased news, which stand at the core of EANA’s mission statement.

Having this in mind, and also the request from members to expel TASS from EANA, the Board, as the executive body of the Alliance, has unanimously decided to immediately suspend TASS from EANA, until a General Assembly will decide, according to the Statutes, whether TASS should be excluded from our Alliance.

The suspension means that TASS will lose access to the resources made available by EANA to its members until the decision about the exclusion is taken. TASS will also be banned from taking part in EANA meetings, online or offline, until the General Assembly decides on the future of its membership. TASS will be allowed to take part and vote in the General Assembly that will decide on its exclusion.

The Board is also calling for an Extraordinary General Assembly to take place in Sarajevo, on May 13th, 9 am CET. The only item on the agenda of this Extraordinary General Assembly would be the decision on the exclusion of TASS from EANA.

The Secretary General will see that the decision of the Board is put into practice.

The European Alliance of News Agencies (EANA) was established in 1956 as a forum for cooperation and exchange of information following the Strasbourg conference.

It is comprised of 32 news agencies that promote and respect copyrights, access to quality information, technological development of the media and media freedoms.

President of EANA is Clemens Pig, Director of the Austrian News Agency APA, while the members of the Board of EANA are Elmir Huremović, General Manager of the Federal News Agency FENA, Fabrice Fries, CEO of AFP and Clive Marshall, Chief Executive of PA Group. Alexandru Ion Giboi is the Secretary General of EANA.

The Federal News Agency FENA has been a member of EANA since 2017, as the only representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and FENA is scheduled to host EANA’s conference this spring.
