No major changes in air traffic over BiH after redirecting of flights in Eastern Europe

SARAJEVO, February 25 (FENA) - Redirection of air traffic over Ukraine and declaring part of the sky in eastern Europe a dangerous overflight zone should not significantly affect air traffic over Bosnia and Herzegovina, said the director of the BiH Aviation Services Agency (BHANSA) ) Davorin Primorac.

"Our analyses have shown that the flights over the airspace of Ukraine, which will be rerouted, will not directly affect the distribution of traffic within the airspace of BiH. What we can expect, if the crisis lasts, is that there will be an overload of air navigation service providers in Hungary and Romania, which could lead to an increase in traffic in our country.

If Hungary and Romania start introducing regulations, BHANSA is ready for a possible increase in turnover within its declared capacity. The complete suspension of flights to and from Ukraine will have a small impact on the distribution of traffic in BiH, where we are talking about 10 flights a day in the coming period, to about 27 flights a day summer season, which is 1.5% of total air traffic in BiH, said Primorac in a statement for FENA..

He points out that the main flows of traffic over BiH goes from Western Europe to Greece and Turkey, and makes up over 80% of the traffic controlled by BHANSA. Therefore, he believes that the situation in Ukraine will not affect the distribution of traffic in the main traffic flows monitored from the center in Sarajevo.

Eurocontrol reacted immediately to the events in Ukraine yesterday and declared a significant area in Eastern Europe a dangerous flying zone. Primorac says they have been informed that many radar stations in Ukraine have been destroyed, all runways blocked, ATC staff evacuated, and that humanitarian corridors are not possible until further notice.

"In addition, we received information that in addition to the airspace of Ukraine and part of the Russian Federation, the airspace above Moldova is also closed. Eurocontrol has made traffic flow simulations, which envisage moving traffic south and north to bypass Ukrainian airspace, while take-offs and landings to and from Ukraine are suspended until further notice. It is too early to say what the actual routing will look like, because, as always, it depends on the preferences of the companies," Primorac concluded.
