Joint Declaration of press councils for strengthening ethics adopted

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, December 6 (FENA) - Press councils from Southeast Europe and Turkey adopted a Joint Declaration at a regional meeting in Sarajevo last month calling for strengthening media ethics in the digital information ecosystem.

Recalling the importance of media self-regulation in strengthening media freedom and combating online disinformation, the press councils of the region called on various actors to ensure their good functioning and sustainability in the digital information ecosystem.

The declaration is the result of a two-day discussion organized within the UNESCO-EU-funded project "Building Confidence in the Media in Southeast Europe - Phase 2", a hybrid event attended by representatives of all self-regulatory bodies in the region: Press Council and online media in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Albanian Press Council, the Kosovo Press Council, the Serbian Press Council, the Media Ethics Council in North Macedonia and the Turkish Press Council.

Representatives of the council discussed the challenges of the ever-evolving information ecosystem, the emergence of new forms of journalism, the dependence of the media and journalists on social media to publish content, and the sustainability of the self-regulatory system. The results of these discussions are summarized in a Joint Declaration signed by representatives of self-regulatory bodies.

The Declaration, therefore, calls on media professionals to ensure sufficient education and awareness of the importance of respecting journalistic standards, but also to ensure the visibility of the media's affiliation with the system of self-regulation.
