Komšić: Renewal of EU integration through equality of citizens

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, October 6 (FENA) - BiH Presidency Chairman Željko Komšić said during the second plenary session of the EU-Western Balkans summit, which discussed the deepening of political dialogue, but also the current situation when it comes to EU enlargement to the Western Balkans, that it is necessary to renew European integration through advocating for the equality of all BiH citizens, and welcomed the initiative for a Common Regional Market CRM.

Chairman Komšić pointed out that enlargement to the Western Balkans makes sense only if it will truly mean the establishment of European values and principles in the Western Balkans, as well as respect for the fundamental achievements of democracy in a civilized society.

“I share your opinion that, in the light of European values, the primary activity of the Western Balkans, and thus Bosnia and Herzegovina, should be focused on the development of full and stable democracy, protection of basic human rights and fundamental freedoms, all through the rule of law,” said Komšić, it was announced from his Office.

He added that he supported the need for decisive efforts towards regional stability, which should serve the Western Balkans and some EU member states to harmonize bilateral relations, in which the legacy of war still has a prominent place.

According to him, Bosnia and Herzegovina remains committed to its European path despite all the challenges and various political influences of third parties.

“I call on the member states of the European Union to preserve the process of European integration for Bosnia and Herzegovina as a sovereign and independent country of equal citizens, who need to see their future in their country,” said Komšić.

Komšić said that it is important to send the message from today's summit - that the Western Balkans should make the transition to European values and standards as soon as possible and that, in that regard, the European Union will provide all necessary help and support.

Chairman Komšić emphasized that Bosnia and Herzegovina is a signatory to the Common Regional Market (CRM) Action Plan.

In this regard, he welcomed the key and historic role of the EU, as the Common Regional Market differs significantly from other regional initiatives, due to the EU's determination to allocate the projected 30 billion euros for the Western Balkans over the next seven years.

He believes that economic and regional integration, based on the basic principles of the EU, is of great importance for improving living standards as well as for the progress of the entire region towards the European path.
