SARAJEVO, August 14 (FENA) - On this day, 73 years ago, Pakistan gained independence.

Pakistan's ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina, His Excellency Mr. Khalid Rao, said Pakistan was created with great sacrifices. Nearly one million people lost their lives during partition in 1947.

- This date means so much for all Pakistanis. When we see people living under repression, such as Kashmiri or Muslims, Christians, and the “Untouchables” in some parts of India, we are very grateful to live in a free country - the Ambassador said, adding that this day is celebrated with great joy throughout Pakistan.
Ambassador Rao said that the founder of Pakistan Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who is considered the father of the nation, led the independence movement of Pakistan.

Jinnah was a barrister, politician, and leader of the All-India Muslim League. He was Pakistan's first governor-general from independence until his death in 1948.

“His vision was for Pakistan to become a strong, modern Muslim state that treats all its citizens, including minorities, equally and has very friendly relations with all countries in general and all neighbors individually. His vision is still central in relation to whichever government comes to power,” the Ambassador told FENA.

Commenting on the role of India as a colony of the British Empire, Ambassador Rao said that the British originally came for trade, not to conquer India, because the Mughal rule under Jehangir was quite powerful and the British India Company (BIC) was not strong.

"However, the British took advantage of the quarrels of local rulers after the Mughal rule weakened after Aurangzeb. They began to gain control over areas and states because of better weapons, technology, and good military organization," he explained.

Ambassador Rao pointed out that the rule of Britain had both positive and negative sides. On the one hand, they exploited the people and used brute force to quell independence struggles, but on the other hand, they brought technology, railways, a telecommunications system, and the like.

As the anniversary of independence is being marked, Ambassador Rao stressed the importance of the existence of democracy and the right to vote as principles on which every society should be based.

“We can cite the situation in Kashmir as an example. The majority Muslim population has always wanted to be part of Pakistan. Their struggle for independence, which gained momentum in 1989, was threatened by the greater aggression and brutality of the Indian security forces. Pakistan wants the Kashmir dispute to be resolved in accordance with UN resolutions on Kashmir and thinks that the wishes of the people of Kashmir should be fulfilled,” the ambassador said.

Asked what message he wants to send to the people of BiH, the ambassador said that Pakistan has great respect for the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina and that they share something in common.

“Bosnia and Herzegovina also gained independence with great sacrifices. That is what unites our two nations. I believe that the new generations should work hard on creating unity and progress of BiH,” concluded Ambassador Rao in a conversation with FENA.
