SARAJEVO, August 9 (FENA) - Sava River Basin Agency, by amending this year's plan and financial plan, provided one million KM for the regulation of the Spreča riverbed and announced a project worth five million dollars to be financed by international financial institutions through UNDP in order to solve the long-standing problem of flooding the surrounding land.

In Tuzla Canton, heavy rainfall was recorded in June, affecting two first-category watercourses in this canton, the Spreča and Tinja rivers.

According to the Director of the Sava River Basin Agency, Sejad Delić, due to the precipitation, there was a sharp increase in the water level on those rivers which caused great material damage in certain locations.

“The plan and financial plan did not envisage funds for the regulation of the Spreča riverbed, except for Doboj-Istog, where 100,000 KM is allocated for cleaning and regulation in that area. The reason why we did not plan it is that in the past years, international financial institutions, through UNDP, expressed their readiness to finance the regulation of the Spreča riverbed in the amount of about five million dollars. Also, certain funds from around two to 2.5 million KM are planned for the regulation of the river Bosna from those funds in Maglaj,” Delić said for FENA.

At the end of last year and the beginning of this year, representatives of the Agency visited Tuzla Canton and talked with the cantonal ministers and mayors of Doboj-Istok, Gračanica and Lukavac, where they pointed out that it is necessary to resolve issues of property relations and building permits so that these activities can be performed in this year or perhaps next year.

Speaking about current projects, Delić singled out the regulation of the Bosna riverbed in the municipality of Novi Grad from the Butila loop to the mouth of the Miljacka river, where the value of the works is around 800,000 KM. Works are also being carried out in Vogošća on the regulation of the Bosna riverbed, then in Ilijaš, and also 250,000 KM have been allocated for the regulation of the Bosna riverbed at the mouth of the Fojnica River in Visoko. The municipality of Kakanj allocated around 350,000 KM by changing the rebalance of the plan.

As for the works related to hydro-construction, Delić pointed out that they are trying to direct as many funds as possible to the economy, to the regulation of riverbeds in order to help the development of economy and construction in that area.

He reminded that international financial institutions did a lot after the great floods in 2014, and expressed hope that certain funds will be operational in the coming period through certain projects of international financial organizations.

“There are protective water facilities in Posavina where the international community together with the Agency invested significant funds. From 2014 to the end of 2019, the Agency invested around 14 million KM for the regulation of protective water facilities and embankments, and international financial institutions allocated 12 million KM so that for the first time in the last 50 years we have protective water facilities, i.e. embankments on the river Sava that have been brought to the level of 100-year-old water plus a meter and 20, that is, we have a situation where for the first time in 50 years the embankments in the Republic of Croatia and the embankments in BiH in this case in the Federation of BiH are at the same level,” said Delić.
