FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, July 22 (FENA) - The Republic of Austria has donated 200,000 euros to the Red Cross of Bosnia and Herzegovina as part of assistance in overcoming the crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The central event of today's meeting between Austrian Ambassador Ulrika Hartmann and Secretary-General of the Red Cross of Bosnia and Herzegovina Rajko Lazić was the symbolic handover of Austrian financial aid to the Red Cross of Bosnia and Herzegovina, said the Austrian Embassy in BiH.

Austrian donations will primarily help groups of the population in Bosnia and Herzegovina who are in a state of special social need, primarily the Roma and migrants. The funds will mostly serve to prevent, and slow down the spread of Covid-19, reduce the death rate from Covid-19, maintain access to basic social assistance and mitigate the socio-economic consequences of the pandemic.

In addition to preventing Covid-19, this aid should also help prevent other infections such as pneumonia, hepatitis A, dysentery and cholera.

Selected families from the Roma population should receive support in the form of cash transfers to meet basic hygiene needs.

The implementation of the assistance program begins on August 1, 2020.

Austria has previously, through the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM), provided support during the Covid-19 crisis in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the amount of 40,000 euros in the form of blankets, bedding sets, hygiene kits, protective gloves and disinfectants.

Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg additionally offered Bosnia and Herzegovina a takeover and treatment in Austria for three patients in need of intensive care.

In addition, in April 2020, the Austrian Embassy collected donations from Austrian companies in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and thanks to these funds it was possible to donate 120 tablets as a donation to 12 schools throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina to help with online classes.

Since May this year, the Austrian Embassy has been supporting the online Women's Counseling Center, run by the Women's Academy, which offers free professional psychotherapy to women in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Together with the current support to the Red Cross Society of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Austria has made available a total of one million euros to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) through the Austrian Development Agency (ADA) for further assistance in the fight against Covid-19 for the countries of Western Balkans - Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia and Albania.
