BIHAĆ, July 13 (FENA) - Migrants who were staying illegally in an abandoned building of the former retirement home in the center of Bihać, caused several small fires in the facility this morning in order to prevent a police operation of relocating all persons to a reception camp in Lipa.

Firefighters quickly intervened to localize all the fires, and allowed police officers to enter the building.

“These are regular police activities, i.e., relocation of people without adequate accommodation in reception camps. The migrants who were staying in this abandoned facility tried to prevent us from doing so, by setting up several small fires at the entrance.

They set fire to garbage and old blankets, but with an adequate reaction from the fire service, everything was quickly brought under control. After that, the police entered the building, and about 60 people they found there were transferred to the camp at the Lipa site.

The assumption is that in the previous days, more than 100 people stayed there, so that a certain number of migrants managed to escape,” said the spokesman of the Una-Sana Canton Police, Ale Šiljdedić.

It was pointed out that currently about 7,000 illegal migrants reside in this part of BiH, and that only about 3,000 of them are accommodated in migration centers.

“Unfortunately, they remained in abandoned buildings, on city streets, private and other properties, so that recently the scope of work of police officers has significantly increased. We act in accordance with international humanitarian standards, but our primary task is to protect the safety and property of the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina,” added Šiljdedić.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Una-Sana Canton also confirmed that more than 15,000 illegal migrants have already been registered this year.
