Džaferović: A law banning genocide denial is the minimum that victims deserve

SARAJEVO, July 9 (FENA) - On the way from Visoko to Potočari, coffins with the remains of identified victims of the genocide committed in and around Srebrenica in 1995, in three funeral vehicles, were sent off today from several locations in Sarajevo.

In front of the building of the Presidency of BiH, the convoy was welcomed by BiH and international officials, religious representatives and citizens.

Chairman of the Presidency of BiH, Šefik Džaferović, told reporters on this occasion that the attitude towards the past should be correctly understood by everyone, in BiH and in the region.

“Unfortunately, in BiH and the region, we have a problem with politicians and elites who do not want to respect the victims of genocide. They do not want to pay respect to them. They do not want to respect the verdicts of the International Court of Justice and the Hague Tribunal.

Respect for genocide victims is a precondition for all future relations, both in BiH and in the region.

I wish that a time would come when those who deny genocide would stop doing that. Then, on the basis of truth and justice, we would continue to build our relations in BiH and in the entire region,” he said.

Džaferović points out that the problem is that many victims have not yet been found, and there is a conspiracy of silence.

“I call on all those who are silent to make it easier for themselves and us, to say where the mass graves are. To find the victims, bury them with dignity. The problem is that only a few high-ranking, military and police authorities from that time were held accountable for the genocide.

There are a lot of those who, in one way or another, took part in that heinous anti-civilization act of genocide. And they must all be brought to justice,” Džaferović said on the eve of the 25th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide.

Asked about the law banning the denial of genocide, Džaferović says that many times so far, the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH has tried to pass the law.

“That is the minimum that needs to be done in BiH, the minimum for the victims. The minimum that needs to be done for all of us, who live in BiH,” he stressed.

“Unfortunately, political forces that deny genocide, glorify war criminals, do not allow us to do that in the parliamentary procedure, and have the key in their hands when it comes to decision-making in the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH.

That is why I believe that the High Representative should have imposed this law a long time ago. Here is an opportunity to do it now; to declare a law banning genocide denial. I will address the UN Security Council, asking it to be done. That is the minimum that the victims of the Srebrenica genocide deserve. This is an exact situation when that law should be imposed,” underlined Džaferović.
