SARAJEVO, June 10 (FENA) - The Sarajevo International Airport gradually returns to commercial flight schedule as of June 1 after a two-month standstill due to the coronavirus pandemic and the closing of interstate borders.
At the moment, flights to Belgrade (Air Serbia) and Budapest (Wizz Air), which take place twice a week, have been re-established.
In mid-June, Eurowings should reestablish flights from Sarajevo to Cologne, once a week, and it has also been announced that flights from Zagreb to Croatia (Croatia Airlines) and Vienna (Austrian Airlines), three times a week, as of mid-June, will be reestablished as well, the Sarajevo International Airport told FENA.
Turkish Airlines announced the reestablishment of flights to Istanbul as of late June.
Due to the currently very small volume of traffic, caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the number of personnel at the Sarajevo International Airport has been significantly reduced, i.e., it has been adjusted to current needs. The increase in the volume of turnover in the coming period will result in an increased number of staff.
In line with the new situation, the Sarajevo International Airport has had a significant reduction in traffic, and operating losses are significant.
In the first quarter, the number of air operations was 22 percent lower than in the same period last year.
In terms of the number of passengers, the reduction is almost the same at 21 percent, while cargo traffic recorded the smallest drop in traffic, 5 percent.
Total revenues have been lower by 20 percent compared to the same period last year.
