SARAJEVO, May 31 (FENA) - White Armband Day, May 31, was marked today on Sarajevo's Eiffel Bridge under the slogan "For equality and the right of all victims to remembrance".
Citizens and activists of the informal group "Because it concerns me" (Jer me se tiče) symbolically paid tribute to the victims of Prijedor and showed solidarity with the citizens of Prijedor, but also with all other victims who have been fighting for the right to remembrance for years.
The gathering in Sarajevo was organized at the same time as in Prijedor, where the parents and relatives of the murdered children are urging local authorities for the right to build a monument for their murdered children.
On behalf of the "Because it concerns me" Initiative, Nedžad Novalić told reporters that this was support from Sarajevo.
“In this way, we use the bridge, as a symbolic object, as a place of remembrance for the murdered children in Prijedor,” said Novalić.
He pointed out that there is a continuous fight for the right to build monuments in Prijedor.
The Initiative said that they do not forget all the other victims who are struggling with various obstructions and who have been denied the right to remembrance.
A temporary memorial for the murdered children in Prijedor, created on the idea of the artist Elma Selman, has been set up on the Skenderija (Eiffel) Bridge in Sarajevo.
White Armband Day has been marked since 2012 to commemorate May 31, 1992, when the Prijedor Municipality Crisis Staff forced the non-Serb population of Prijedor to mark their houses and apartments with white flags while those moving through the city were forced to wear a white ribbon around the arm.
