SARAJEVO, May 21 (FENA) - Ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden to Bosnia and Herzegovina Johanna Strömquist and UNICEF Representative in BiH Rownak Khan signed an agreement worth 4.3 million Swedish krona (about 408,000 EUR) to provide further support for UNICEF response to COVID-19 in the areas of social protection, child protection, and adolescent development and participation.
The socio-economic aspect of the pandemic is negatively affecting children, adolescents and young people in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The support of the Embassy of the Kingdom of Sweden will enable UNICEF to respond to the current crisis, but also to help recover and protect children, youth and families from its consequences, UNICEF said.
“There is a risk that the current crisis will have a more serious and long-term impact on children, young people and families, who are already the most socio-economically endangered. This support will enable UNICEF to provide them with support and services of social protection and inclusion, in cooperation with local partners,” said Strömquist.
Thanks to the support of the Government of the Kingdom of Sweden, UNICEF will help at least 1,500 families with children, providing them with psychosocial assistance in the field of mental health in their local communities. In addition, 500 experts from the centers for social work and schools will be trained for crisis interventions in a virtual way for all those who need it.
“UNICEF and the Embassy of the Kingdom of Sweden have successfully teamed up to ensure the rights of the most vulnerable children in this country. This contribution will enable UNICEF to continue to provide timely and effective assistance to the most vulnerable children, young people and families in partnership with the BiH authorities, NGOs and communities,” Khan said.
This agreement is a continuation of successful cooperation between UNICEF and the Government of the Kingdom of Sweden, which has been a strategic partner of UNICEF's Justice for Every Child program for many years, and one of the key donors supporting interventions aimed at empowering young people and adolescents.
