Izetbegović: We are obliged to have all the funds for elections

SARAJEVO, May 20 (FENA) - Member of the Collegium of the House of Peoples of the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH and President of the Party of Democratic Action (SDA) Bakir Izetbegović today talked about possible extension of local elections for a month if necessary funds are not provided, saying that a month is not a problem, and that it should not be prolonged longer than that.

He expressed hope that by the end of May, the Council of Ministers of BiH will adopt the budget of BiH institutions for 2020, "because we are obliged to have all the funds for the elections, we cannot have only a part of the funds."

“I don't know what they are waiting for, they have had so much time, they could have done it so far,” he stated.

He explained that "we must have all the funds that cover the cost of the complete election process, so we expect the budget to be finally adopted and to have funds for the elections and other activities."

When asked about Mostar, he said that there has been progress at the local level.

“However, there are still problems with one issue that is very important to us, and that it is necessary to have a deputy mayor in Mostar. That is the position of the SDA. We had it, but it was abolished by the High Representative. I think that we must rule together in Mostar, we cannot allow one side to rule over the other and over the third, we must govern by agreement and that is why we are in favor of temporarily having the position of mayor and deputy mayor,” said Bakir Izetbegović.

Answering a journalist's question about the functioning of the coalition, i.e. how he commented on the "strong cooperation" between HDZ and SNSD, Izetbegović said that "we have had this cooperation between SNSD and HDZ for a decade".

“Today I talked with President of HDZ BiH Dragan Čović in the sense that in BiH one should never form a coalition of two, but at least three. I think that we should include the fourth element, civil parties, which is very strong in BiH,” said Izetbegović.

He added that the SDA has cooperation with them in certain segments.

“Wherever the Constitution, the law and the interests of BiH are defended, we cooperate with any of these three partners. We would like to work together, and that all four components to push in the same direction of reforms, integration,” Izetbegović stated.

He added that he spoke with HDZ BiH President very honestly about these things, "to simply stop these brakes and to resolve this matter with the IMF."

“Today we have a proposal for amendments to the Constitutional Court, which is not harmonized with the SDA. At the same time, Čović complains that there is no real coalition, no real cooperation between HDZ and SDA, and then this kind of thing is done with SNSD, one-sided,” stated Izetbegovic.

Unfortunately, he added, "we fail to get out of that vicious circle."
